Projected balance assumes a constant return and steady contributions. Monthly income uses a 25-year drawdown. Excludes taxes, COLA adjustments, and pension income.

What makes the 457(b) different?

Unlike 401(k) and 403(b) plans, the 457(b) has no 10% early withdrawal penalty. If you separate from your employer, you can access your money at any age without penalty — only regular income tax applies. This makes it especially valuable for early retirees.

Who has a 457(b)?

State and local government employees — police, firefighters, teachers in some states — and some nonprofit employees. Many government workers have both a pension and a 457(b), making them one of the best-positioned groups for retirement.
