How it works
Converting to a Roth means paying income tax on the amount now, but all future growth and withdrawals come out tax-free. Leaving it traditional lets the full balance grow, but every dollar is taxed when you withdraw. This assumes you pay the conversion tax from the converted balance and compares the two after growth — Roth usually wins when your tax rate is the same or higher in retirement.
