How it works

Your FIRE number is the savings target that lets you live off withdrawals indefinitely, using a safe withdrawal rate — the classic version is the 4% rule, meaning you need about 25 times your annual spending. This calculates that number, then projects how many years of your current savings rate it takes to reach it. Lowering your spending shrinks the target twice: once directly, and again because you need less to fund it.
