How it works
A cash balance plan gives you a hypothetical account that grows two ways each year: a pay credit (a set percentage of your salary) is added, and the whole balance earns an interest credit. This projects the balance forward assuming a level salary and splits how much came from pay credits versus interest — the lump sum you'd typically roll over or annuitize at retirement.
