How it works
When a pension is split in a divorce, usually only the part earned during the marriage is divided. The coverture fraction — years married while earning the pension divided by total years of service — sets that marital portion. This estimates the pension's present value, applies the coverture fraction to find the marital share, and shows a typical 50/50 split. A QDRO (Qualified Domestic Relations Order) is the legal document that actually divides it.
